Please support Chicana literature
On November 22, 2008, Alicia received news from St Martin's Press that her historical novel Calligraphy of the Witch will be remaindered. Basically what that means is that since being release on October 16, 2007, only 1500 copies sold, therefore her book will be liquidated from the press' warehouse. It's like death of a book.
Although, the press didn't do much to promote it... not even schedule a book reading at the Festival of Books which happens yearly at UCLA, Alicia blames herself.
She blames herself for not being able to do more to promote her book. Since the book was released, her time has been tied up as a professor and department chair of the UCLA Cesar Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies. She has made great contributions there at the sacrifice of her writing career and most immediately, the death of Calligraphy of the Witch.
Like so many artists and writers who teach, her contribution as a professor is very important, but so is her contribution to our history and culture. Please support her by purchasing a copy of Calligraphy of the Witch from www.amazon.com or www.barnesandnoble.com or your local bookstore. Also, send an email to Daniela Rapp at Daniela.Rapp@stmartins.com at St Martin's Press to urge her to get this book printed in paperback so that Alicia can have a second chance to promote it. Thank you.
